Great news for Norwegian employers

December 03, 2021

The Norwegian government is introducing changes to the regulations concerning the employer's period (arbeidsgiverperiode). Employees working for Norwegian companies who go on sick leave related to the diagnosis of Covid or who are infected with the virus are of course entitled to sickness benefit (Norwegian: sykepenger).

What is the employer's period in Norway?

Before the obligation to pay the sickness benefit is taken over by the Norwegian social welfare office - NAV, the employer is obliged to pay the benefit during the so-called arbedisgiverperiode, i.e. the employer's period. By default, this period is 16 days. Also, oself employed persons, who do not have additional insurance, may receive benefits from NAV only from the 17th day of sick leave.

Changes in Norwegian regulations - as soon as possible

The Norwegian government has announced the introduction of a reduced employer period as soon as possible. The shortened period is to apply until June 30, 2022.
The employer's period will be only 5 days.
Only applies to sick leaves related to the coronavirus.
The shortened employer's period also applies to owners of sole proprietorships (enkeltersonforetak).
